In
Gubbio the art of ceramics has existed since the early 1300s, as laid
down in ancient documents that specify the two great master craftsmen -
“VASARI” a producer of simple terracottas and “FIGULI” a
more refined craftsman in his production of forms and unique decoration.
The fame of Gubbio is linked to “MASTRO GIORGIO DI PIETRO DI PAVIA”
who in 1498 began his production in the city and his works were so
famous that they were presented to the courts of the Dukes of
Montefeltro and Pope Leo X.
His technique of “LUSTRO” (lustre), or
third firing, was applied to the glazed object to give it iridescent
metallic effects and ruby red, gold and silver reflections.
His fame continues five centuries later, in that many have tried
to reproduce his works but the original hand of the craftsman remains
unequalled.
What
are the essential steps in the creation of a ceramic object?
